Managing Anticipation, Joy and Relief
Remember the thrill of tuning in to the radio, waiting to hear if your school was closed for a snow day? That anticipation, the blend of hope and excitement, is a powerful emotion. How can we, as leaders, recreate that energy within our teams to foster engagement and innovation, without leading to disappointment?
1. Define Clear, Achievable Milestones
• Set Specific Goals: Clearly outline what success looks like for each project phase. This provides direction and a sense of purpose.
• Celebrate Small Wins: Recognize and reward progress, no matter how minor. This keeps morale high and maintains momentum.
2. Foster a Culture of Open Communication
• Transparent Expectations: Be upfront about what is expected and any potential challenges. This builds trust and prepares the team for obstacles.
• Encourage Feedback: Create an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas and concerns. This leads to continuous improvement and innovation.
3. Balance Autonomy with Support
• Empower Your Team: Allow individuals the freedom to explore creative solutions. This fosters ownership and intrinsic motivation.
• Provide Guidance: Be available to offer support and direction when needed, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
4. Create Anticipation Through Strategic Initiatives
• Innovative Projects: Introduce initiatives that challenge the status quo and encourage creative thinking. For example, Google’s “20% time” allows employees to work on passion projects, leading to significant innovations.
• Tease Upcoming Changes: Share glimpses of future projects or changes to build excitement and prepare the team for what’s ahead.
5. Manage Expectations to Prevent Letdowns
• Set Realistic Deadlines: Ensure timelines are attainable to avoid unnecessary stress and disappointment.
• Be Honest About Limitations: Acknowledge any constraints and work collaboratively to find solutions.
In my experience, I’ve seen firsthand how creating a sense of anticipation can drive engagement and innovation. By setting clear milestones, fostering open communication, balancing autonomy with support, introducing strategic initiatives, and managing expectations, leaders can cultivate an environment where anticipation leads to sustained enthusiasm and success.
